and thick silence falls across the room as every head turns to face the oddly-matched couple. "Relax, y'all," the donkey assures them. "Yeah," agrees the elephant, "we're just colluding to raise the ballot access threshhold even higher for new parties!" At which point the bartender notices that the donkey and elephant heads are conjoined on the body of the same terrifying mutant! Run for your lives! Democracy as we know it is over!

Big Oil are such (g)assholes. And so are we.
I researched some interesting data recently. Gas prices have been rising, and although they are not exactly proportional to the price increases in the price of oil per barrel (refining costs are a big part of what you pay), they have been way ahead of the regular rate of inflation. Industry commentators on the news feed us the lie that a) "constricting supply" has raised prices and b) the current US recession has left one of the few safe havens for investors to be the oil industry. These explanations would seem to make sense. Until this week, the beginning of earnings season. Check out the profits below. (FYI, in case you weren't sure, these figures are in billions. ...With a "B". For the QUARTER.) ... Read More

Dems grow a spine re: Bolton and Miers
House Cites 2 Bush Aides for Contempt By PHILIP SHENON Published: February 14, 2008 WASHINGTON — The House voted Thursday to issue contempt citations against the White House chief of staff and a former White House counsel for refusing to cooperate in an investigation into the mass firings of federal prosecutors. The vote to hold Joshua B. Bolten, the chief of staff, and Harriet E. Miers, the former counsel, in contempt of Congress followed bitter partisan wrangling on the House floor, including a Republican walkout from the chamber, and moved House Democrats closer to a constitutional showdown with President Bush.
